Insights from 1 Timothy

I have been going through the book of 1 Timothy using this Bible study as a guide
Walking in Power, Love, and Discipline: 1 and 2 Timothy/Titus

Here are some insights from this book of the Bible written to a young pastor in Ephesus in the early church.

Paul left Timothy in Ephesus when went to Macedonia. 1 Timothy was written so that Timothy would know how to behave in the household of God.

Sound vs. Unsound Doctrine
This is characterized throughout the book – what is sound, what is not. Sound doctrine is from the administration of God while unsound is strange myths, endless genealogies, mere speculation and fruitless discussion.

The goal is to have love from a pure heart, a good conscience and sincere faith.

The Law –

  • some want to teach it
  • is good IF one uses it lawfully
  • Not made for the righteous
  • made for the lawless and rebellious
  • made for ungodly and sinners
  • made for unholy and profane
  • made for those who kill their parents
  • made for murderers, immoral men, homosexuals, kidnappers, liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching according to God’s gospel

A side note from Galatians – the law was a tutor to lead to Christ – to be justified by faith. Before faith came, we were “shut up” to faith. Faith was revealed later. Faith is now here – no longer under the tutor (ie law).

About Jesus Christ – Paul is His apostle, Paul was commanded by Christ to be an apostle.
Jesus is our hope. Jesus is our Lord. Jesus strengthened Paul and put Paul into service. He considered Paul faithful. Jesus’ grace is more than abundant. Faith and love are found in Christ. He came into the world to save sinners. In Paul, Jesus demonstrates His perfect patience – an example for others who believe in Him.
Jesus is the King: eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God.
(from Galatians) faith in Jesus makes us sons of God, baptized into Christ – clothed with Christ. We are all one in Christ. Those who belong to Christ are heirs of Abraham according to promise.

About Timothy – he is Paul’s true child in the faith. He was urged to remain at Ephesus and told to instruct men. The command was entrusted to him. Timothy is called Paul’s son. There are prophecies concerning him. By this he may fight the good fight. He is a good servant of Jesus.

Chapter 2 talks about prayer. Some synonyms used are: entreaties, prayers, petitions, thanksgivings. These are to be made on behalf of all men:

  • kings
  • all in authority
  • for purpose of us leading a quiet life
  • one mediator, Jesus
  • every place to pray
  • lift up holy hands
  • done without wrath or dissension

Jesus Christ – mediator between God and man. He is man and gave Himself as a ransom for all. He is the testimony borne at proper time.
God – there is one God, our Savior, desires all to be saved, desires all to come to knowledge of truth.

The purpose for writing 1 Timothy – how to conduct ourselves in God’s household.
